Help improve public services in Scotland as a graduate trainee

By Mark Taylor, Audit Director, Audit Scotland

With continuing pressures on public services, public audit really has never been more important. Our graduate trainees are a hugely important part of our work and life at Audit Scotland. From day one you’ll get hands-on-work experience and play an active part in our work auditing £40 billion of public money, which funds the vital public services you, your family and friends use every day.

One of the most common questions we get asked by those interested in our trainee scheme is: ‘Do I need a degree in Accounting or Finance?’ No. Our trainees come from a whole variety of backgrounds – those that have just graduated, mature students, those looking for a career change. And between them there is a vast range of degree subjects including Law and Philosophy! What matters is that you have a 2:1 degree or above in any discipline and strong numerical and analysis skills.AS_Graduate_sm_banners_quotes3

With Audit Scotland you will gain a full year’s work experience prior to starting a fully sponsored qualification with ICAS to become a Chartered Accountant, whilst continuing your on-the-job training. If you want to know more about this side of the scheme check out this guest blog from Graham Foster, a lecturer with ICAS, who tells us more about the areas you’d study and exams you’d take.

We’re proud of the support network we offer our trainees, and if you’re successful in joining us you’ll receive mentor support and guidance. In addition, you’ll also enjoy benefits such as:

  • Competitive salary
  • 38 days holiday (inclusive of 8 floating public holidays), 4 fixed public holidays, flexi-time and exam leave
  • Career development and training opportunities.
